Lifting a straight leg makes the quadriceps hold the knee out straight while the hip flexors carry the limb.

Before you start

  • Knee bends and will not straighten: stop the set.
  • Pain past 5 out of 10: stop the set.
  • Pain travels below the knee: stop the exercise.

The movement

  1. Lie on your back on a bed or the floor.
  2. Bend the other knee, that foot flat.
  3. Straighten the leg you will lift.
  4. Tighten the thigh of the straight leg.
  5. Hips level.
  6. Camera to one side.

  1. Tighten the thigh until the knee is straight.
  2. Lift the straight leg a few inches off the bed.
  3. Hold 5 seconds.
  4. Lower the leg slowly.
  5. Relax the thigh.
