Single leg stand

Guidance

Standing on one leg is the balance task that walking, stair climbing and stepping over a threshold all reduce to.

Before you start

A session holds exercises. An exercise holds sets. Stop what a rule names and everything inside it.

  • Foot goes down: stop the hold.
  • Two grabs for the support: stop the exercise.
  • Dizzy: stop the session.

The movement

  1. Stand tall beside a bench or solid table.
  2. One hand on the support.
  3. Eyes ahead, fixed point.
  4. Firm level floor.
  5. Clear space on the free side.
  6. Feet hip width apart.

  1. Shift the weight onto one leg.
  2. Lift the other foot just clear of the floor.
  3. Hold 10 seconds.
  4. Put the foot down.
  5. Repeat on the other leg.
